{"id":501,"date":"2021-01-24T21:57:34","date_gmt":"2021-01-24T21:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smithkas.com\/?p=501"},"modified":"2021-01-24T21:57:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T21:57:40","slug":"international-day-of-education-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smithkas.com\/?p=501","title":{"rendered":"International Day of Education 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we observe this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/education-day\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/education-day\">International Day of Education<\/a>, we should not only remind ourselves that education is a human right and about the challenges to achieving universal education, we should also look forward and start preparing our communities and countries for a post COVID-19 pandemic world. The declaration calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/child-rights-convention\">Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a>, adopted in 1989, goes further to stipulate that countries shall make higher education accessible to all. <em>(https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/education-day)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;<strong>Challenges to achieving universal education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school.
